All right, it was a nice long weekend here in PA. Let’s see, here is a run down of our weekend here. Frid night we watched open season with Kirsten then went to be early, Sat - Jen had some blood work done, we went to philly to have a famous cheese steak at Pat’s then we went to the liberty bell. We came home, Jen took a long nap i played some viva pinata and crackdown and ran a couple of miles and mowed the yard. Sunday - we struggled through the fast with the crock pot a simmering, wafting it’s haunting goodness to our empty stomachs. Then Jen went to a Glenn Beck fireside last night and she said it was really good, i wanted to go but it was pretty late and kirsten was out! Well, just saw that scam posted, so i’ll go check that out.

glenn beck gave a fireside. man, kressyda would have loved that. she’s really into talk radio.

tuffy, did you call me?

Comment by The Scam — June 4, 2007 @ 9:57 am

yes i called, the second time we finally connected! I can’t really imagine Kress listening to talk radio, i could see her having her own show.

Comment by jtuffy — June 4, 2007 @ 11:00 am

oh man, she gets into it. she really likes neil bortz. she even has a book by him. she doesn’t like the jerky guys like hanity or rush.

I stripped and painted cabinets, just like I am doing right now. And I snuck in a little wow time. We also went to Dianne Young baby’s blessing. The whole Young clan was there and Stephanie said to say hello to everyone.

I finaly found some pictures of potts I recently sold. I am going to put them up on my page along with the prices. Let me know what you think.

i saw isaac in tulsa a couple of months ago. he was in town for neil’s eagle court of honor. he seemed like the same guy. i thought we would all look different as adults. what’s the deal?

Comment by The Scam — June 4, 2007 @ 12:26 pm

i would love to see the side by side photos of everyone when they were 16! That would be hilarious.

The youngs are quite the family!

Seth, i can’t remember where i have seen these pots, maybe you sent them in the chain emails back in the days. What else do you have, any reds? Can you do any piece, like if i found a picture of something i like? Also, so you sold the plate for 50, what are the costs that go into that, like $5 of clay, how long does the process take? Just trying to get a feel of the costs, i really don’t care how much they are, just curious.

Comment by jtuffy — June 4, 2007 @ 12:41 pm

Well, lets see. The pie plate probably has about $1.50 of clay in it. And a few cents worth of glaze and oxide. The misleading thing about the cost, is that I can’t just go out and buy the materials for a few bucks (I can while I’m in school though) I have to buy the matterials in bulk. And the more you buy, the cheaper the shiping, so when I have my own studio… it’ll be a few thousand dollars a pop for matterials, once or twice a year.

The pie plate probably took about 15 minutes to throw and trim. Then it was fired to 1750 degrees, 10 more minutes to glaze, fired to 2400 degrees and then the bottom was sanded taking about 5 minutes. Loading the small kiln I use takes anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour depending on the complexity of the stack. The first firing takes about 8 hours and cools for at least 12. The Second takes around 14 and cools for 12-24. Add to that the drying time and a whole batch of potts is gonna take you about a week, sometimes more or less. I have cranked out a rush job in about 4 days, but didn’t really sleep at all… and whenever I do that my imune system seems to stop and I always get sick, so I only do that if it’s very important, lol.

As for colors and designs. I can do red. Not only can I do it, I enjoy it. This is important because generaly an artist that is making something they dislike isn’t really making art. As for designs, I generaly don’t directly replicate other peices. Though, I can give you my spin on the peice. These things really come down to the artistic philosophy, and being an artist as opposed to a manufacturer. I’m not just trying to make pots to make money, don’t get me wrong… I want them to sell. But, I’m trying to express something through them… and that comes first.

So, for custom jobs… let me see what you have in mind and I’ll let you know what I can and would be willing to do. Hope that answers a few of your questions.

Those are pretty cool. When I get home, I’ll post some pictures of the bowls I have been making. They are square, I have really been having fun with them.

alright, since its just the three of us these days, what book do you guys want to read next? i thought sh-5 was a minor success. once we all got rolling i thought we had some good discussion.

Comment by The Scam — June 4, 2007 @ 2:59 pm

i agree, sh-5 was seth’s pick, so you’re up scam!

Comment by jtuffy — June 4, 2007 @ 3:03 pm

oooo, so many choices. i just finished “a man for all seasons”. it was a pretty decent read. but let me think of something a little more discussable. i’ll get back to you. i’ll throw out three options and we can vote.

Comment by The Scam — June 4, 2007 @ 3:24 pm

I’m glad you guys are on the book… I was going to bring that up today. I’m excited to see what the Scam comes up with. And Jon for that matter… I think when I come around again it’s gonna be comic book time!

Comment by Seth — June 4, 2007 @ 4:19 pm

Okay, here’s a couple:

Sex, Drugs and Cocoa Puffs - Chuck Klosterman ( a collection of essays and thoughts from the editor of SPIN)
The Prince - Machiavelli (a study of effective governing under principalities)
New Ideas From Dead CEOs - Todd Buccholz ( self describing)

This is a preliminary list. I may change things up if none of these get anyone jazzed.

What about a church book? would anyone be down?

Comment by The Scam — June 4, 2007 @ 5:35 pm

I would rather not vote, i would rather you just pick one. You can be our oprah!

Comment by jtuffy — June 4, 2007 @ 8:57 pm

cameron is our oprah. Acts all caring, giving, and kind, but its all for show to look good. LOL. What happened to michael these days. is he hard at work doing laundry. Man conoco must be the life. you two seem to have hours and hours of free time to chat it up. cameron what is carrie up to?

So over the weekend we got gracie all registerd for Soccer, then went and got her geared up. got some cute shorts, some cute cleats, some cute shin gaurds. She is ready to go. The only problem is she seems to think she is already an expert. I am trying to talk to her about practicing and listening to her coach, and she says, I already practiced, I already know how to play soccer. You don’t know dad, I practice everyday. I think she has practiced twice!! So today she started a little training camp. they just run around learning how to dribble the ball. I garrantee I am better than all those 4 and 5 year olds. So anyways hopefully she is as good of an athlete as her dad, and decides to take up a real sport not just a hobbie. Other than that I got some good napping in over the weekend. I also went and took a look in person at the Polaris RZR. Oh bessy it is a thing of beauty. 2 more weeks and she’ll be mine. We really should do a trip out this way this summer. We could do some riding in the high dessert during the day and hit vegas at night. Its really lame we don’t see each other more often.

anyways you girls keep it real.

later

Yo yo yo homies! I’m back and in action to save you from the fiction of our world! (fiction books that is)

Hey, have you guys ever heard one of those prank phone calls radio shows usually do where they take audio excerpts from celebrities or movies and use them like the “Home Alone” kid did, remember? They can be really hilarious. When you get home and can listen to this, you need to take 2 1/2 minutes to hear this. It’s Dr. Phil calling a Scientology representative. It’s not crude, just funny. There are many others that are pretty funny too, like Mr. Rogers calling some dude. Anyway, check it out when you get the chance, it’s really funny.
