So how bout some advice today, i’m thinking about writing an email to my boss’s boss. Stating the injustice that is now my job. To preface it, i was told this was a grade 12-13 job i came into, I’m a grade 11, (grades are salary). So my boss says that if anything happens it wouldn’t be till next March. So i say, “ok, i can live with that”. Then, the Sr. analyst quits, so i pick up all his stuff, so now i’m doing two jobs and i’m doing the sr analsyt position. Now wouldn’t you think i would get compensated?? They haven’t hired anyone else, but i know they will, so i’ll have to train the new, $100K a year, Sr analyst what i’m currently doing now. This company is completly ridiculous!!!

So what do you think, should i write the email?

Also, as a precursor, this guy (the boss’s boss) told me to keep him abreast of things before I came out here.

Comment by jtuffy — June 29, 2007 @ 8:23 am

you might just inform him of your concern. i wouldn’t start making any demands just yet. you don’t want to piss anyone off. maybe you could just explain the situation and then ask him to explain the reasoning behind the present actions being taken. then it looks like you are concerned/interested instead of just whining.

ahh, the corporate game.

seth left us on a pretty hot note last night. responses? i don’t think any one meant offense, seth, i think it is just spencer’s way of showing his pride in you. but that’s just me.

Comment by The Scam — June 29, 2007 @ 9:27 am

That is what i was planning on doing, i wouldn’t drop any bombs, just feel it out, just show my concerns.
Yes the corporate game is ridiculous. This is the second time this has happened though.

I just read the blogs from last night, pretty funny stuff. That was a hot rebuttal.

Comment by jtuffy — June 29, 2007 @ 10:16 am

what are the qualifications required for a sr. analyst? is there anyway you can manipulate your experience to fit what they are looking for? or is it just a matter of time?

Comment by The Scam — June 29, 2007 @ 11:00 am

Tuffy, one thing to keep in mind is that you ARE probably getting extra credit for this. I could be completely wrong, but I would think that things like this are noted in your file and will be considered for future promotions. It may just be the way it is–that you have to play these games to get to the top. Maybe this is how you can show you are Sr. analyst material. They may be testing you which may lead to bigger rewards over the long haul. I could keep explaining my point but I think you get it. You may just lay low for a little while, get the job done, then use this as your leverage for moving up soon. If you jump up too fast then you don’t have much of a foundation. Doing it this way, you have a strong foundation. What do you think?

Comment by DOMS 287 — June 29, 2007 @ 11:19 am

Both good arguable points, but i don’t want to work for somewhere that rewards you based on time and experience, I am extremely proficient, confident, cocky and capable, I want to be rewarded for job performance. My boss even told me that i could do the job, but that just isn’t “how it works”, he siad i can’t leapfrog too fast.

Comment by jtuffy — June 29, 2007 @ 11:22 am

Yeah, so the email is probably a bad idea then. It seems your only options are to play their gay or dare to dream and do something else that is less limiting (your own business). Either way you’ll still need to play their game for a while at this point. Of course there is that chance they’ll like your go-gettem attitude if you do pursue this … but they may not.

Comment by DOMS 287 — June 29, 2007 @ 11:27 am

On the other hand, maybe you have nothing to lose and everything to gain if you play your cards right. Maybe worst possible case you learn a lot from the experience. Maybe you should give it a shot.

Comment by DOMS 287 — June 29, 2007 @ 11:29 am

If you think about it, they are making out like gangbusters. They’re getting top work done for a low price (as you already know of course). They may take advantage of you as long as they can (that is, as long as you acquiesce). Maybe you have to show them you know this isn’t going to work for long.

Comment by DOMS 287 — June 29, 2007 @ 11:33 am

exactly, its highway robbery, at least i know that it is a fixed time and that something should happen in march

Comment by jtuffy — June 29, 2007 @ 12:14 pm

DOMS is right, what’s the worst that can happen? they wouldn’t fire you for writing the email but they might not look too fondly on the whole idea if you don’t time it right. you know the situation best and you know your circumstances. it is definitely a tough one.

but you do have to be gutsy in this business. nice guys finish last.

Comment by The Scam — June 29, 2007 @ 12:32 pm

I think scam and I have settled on the same page. So where do you stand now tuffy?

Comment by DOMS 287 — June 29, 2007 @ 12:39 pm

anybody got big plans for the 4th?

DOMS, you’ll be here right? i’m actually going to be in utah with the inlaws.

Comment by The Scam — June 29, 2007 @ 2:05 pm

You know what? Funny you should ask. There’s a chance, now, that I won’t be leaving for Tulsa tomorrow as planned. Yep, story of my life with Brooke–miscommunication. 95% of our fights our simple miscommunications. I just learned last night, after having done everything necessary to leave on Sat, that Brooke didn’t even plan on leaving then anymore. When my Meemee’s surgery was postponed for the 11th, Brooke requested at work to stay another week so we can stay another week in Tulsa. I think you all know this. However, she calls me and says that the only person that can make that decision will be gone until Monday, and it will be a problem to change now. So, I thought, with that information, that we certainly weren’t going to chance losing all this time–we would leave on Sat as planned. Nope. She expects to wait til Monday to decide and I didn’t really know that until last night. Actually, she may decide to leave tomorrow still. I just don’t know anything. If I’m here for the 4th, tuffy and I will probably hit MA in the face!

Comment by DOMS 287 — June 29, 2007 @ 2:15 pm

you guys are up there with all of the historical stuff. that would be fun to hit on the 4th. in D.C. they do a huge fireworks show on the mall.

communication would be so much easier if i just made all of the decisions.

Comment by The Scam — June 29, 2007 @ 2:18 pm

Hit MA in the face? HUH

Comment by jtuffy — June 29, 2007 @ 2:40 pm

i liked his phrasing on that too. very descriptive.

Comment by The Scam — June 29, 2007 @ 3:33 pm

Alright guys, which of the following are you most scared of? (oops, did I end this sentence with a preposition?)

A. Snakes
B. Spiders
C. Ants
D. Plane Crash
E. Disease
F. Popping a woody during a doctor’s examination
G. Poking your eye out when walking through the woods in the dark
H. Sleep walking into danger
I. Falling asleep while driving
J. Your wife seeing you check out another girl
K. Terrorist attack

You can choose more than one, just rank them if you do.

Comment by DOMS 287 — June 29, 2007 @ 5:05 pm

Ok… that post of mine from “last night” was actualy this morning before I left for work. I finished a full day of work by 2:30 this afternoon. And, I know the post seemed a little edgie… it’s because I have work 15+ hours every day this week and only got about 4ish hours of sleep every night. Needless to say, I was a little grumpy. So, my apologies.

The thing I am most affraid of is not on the list. It’s breaking teath. Just the thought of having a tooth violently broken in some maner is making me nauscious.

After a week of hard work I was about to go out and get an x-box… but the bosss said no. Sorry guys, I tried… maybe in the near future.

Comment by Seth — June 29, 2007 @ 5:38 pm

yep sethels, you need a reward, wait just one more week then get the 360.

Comment by jtuffy — June 29, 2007 @ 5:49 pm

Breaking teeth is a good one. Speaking of Seth’s morning post, can’t you just see spence pulling his head out of his butt and checking out the view!

Comment by DOMS 287 — June 29, 2007 @ 5:53 pm

I know scams would be J, boy would he get a lashing! I don’t know what mine would be, probably something happening to the family.

Comment by jtuffy — June 29, 2007 @ 9:37 pm

I actually put J in there with him in mind!! Too funny!

Comment by DOMS 287 — June 29, 2007 @ 9:43 pm

I must admit, you guys are pretty funny yourselves. The question was “which of the following …”. Not what are you most afraid of. Anyway, beggars can’t be choosers, I guess.

Comment by DOMS 287 — June 29, 2007 @ 9:47 pm

Seth I didn’t mean anything negative with the post a couple of nights ago. I was just noticing how much you were enjoying working, and decided to comment on it. now if we can just get michael to enjoy this aspect of life.

Tuffy definantly write the email. Don’t talk about money, don’t complain, don’t call your boss a dipstick. Start it out with how you have enjoyed the new job, and being there. be crafty about making your boss seem like a smuck. tell him you are enjoying the new responsibilities that were the sr anylist and that you wish you could continue with that. That you feel more than capable of doing it. I don’t know if it is the same everywhere, but I know for myself, I have always found it better to take all the work or responsibility I can with no questions about how much am I going to make on this. After you have produced then, you can bring it up. But usualy your boss will have already given you the raise for it. And like they have said your not going to lose your job over it. and if you did, you would find a better job anyways.

this rain in Tulsa is ridiculous.

Comment by Jimmy Hostility — June 30, 2007 @ 9:14 am

Hey Jimmy… go to Billy Ray’s and eat a ton of ribs and catfish for me, okay. And sorry once again about the over-reaction the other night. I am really liking the work… but not so much the lost sleep. It’s killin me. Hopefuly school will seem easy after all these long days, but I kinda doubt it. This semester is gonna be really buisy.

Just on my lunch break from our work on the house. We got all the exterior walls up on one this morning, and cut everything for the interior walls. We should be able to get all the interior walls up and the exterior walls for another house by the end of the day. We are way ahead of schedule.

Though we did just have kind of a big problem. A couple of the foundations were poured on the wrong lots! Crazy huh? The lots were mismarked by the developement to begin with. But our forman, the excavators, the concreate guys and the building inspectors all missed it! What a bunch of yutz. Anyway, it’s surprising how little this is going to set us back. Even with the delays we will stil be way ahead of schedule.

Comment by Seth — June 30, 2007 @ 2:46 pm

Hey you guys (and spence)! We’re still in CT, so we are planning on leaving in one week, just so you know. Anyway, I have a BIG question for you guys. This one is not supposed to be funny. I need some serious advice. Not like the advice you would ask and kind of already probablyu know what you’re going to do (probably like the case of tuffy yesterday). This one is something that has been bothering me for years and I need to know if I should do something. I don’t have time to write it now, so I will write it in an hour or so, if all goes as planned. This is serious, so I need some serious advice. It’s crazy (well at least I think so), but not a super intriguing crazy, so don’t get your hopes up. Anyway, I’ll be back soon. Spence, I want your advice, but I want you to be totally serious and realistic. Every reliable input counts.

Comment by DOMS 287 — June 30, 2007 @ 7:19 pm

Well since no one pays attention on the weekends, I guess I’ll not rush to post this one. I’ll post it when I have more time.

I’ll tell you this though (tuffy, you’ll love to hear this). Last night Brooke and I went to TGI Friday’s. It was too late to sit at at normal seat, so we had to sit at the tables around and for the bar. It was just a normal booth, but it is for the bar. We walk in and man, I can’t tell you how much I hate to be around these type of people (at least alone with Brooke that is)–I was on guard. We take the very first booth so we don’t have to really walk into it all. Didn’t matter, there was a huge group of all guys we had to be next to and the booth next to ours was of four other guys. We are surrounded. Well, as Brooke walks ahead of me, the guys in the booth must have been signaled the same as the group of guys b/c all the ones with their backs to us are now turning all the way around to see Brooke. I step up and get the guys attention in the booth. They turned around, but the other guys are facing me so I just stop and do a complete stare down. Then I turn to my left and that’s when I see the other group of guys all turned and looking at her. She’s sitting down at this point. That second time was too much. So I turned to face them (I’m like three steps away). As soon as I did most of them turned back around. A few guys are standing there and already facing the general direction and still looking. So I say, in a really confronting way throwing my arms out, “What, you wanna sit down too!” I totally did it in a way that was like don’t mess with me. So the they all turned around except one; and he said, kind of quietly like he didn’t want to back down but still didn’t want to test me, “There’s a tv above you.” as if that’s why he was looking. So I said, in a really like speak up if you have some thing to say kind of way, “What!” He just kind of turned around at that point. So I sat down very uncomfortable in that place. It was ridiculous how all the guys were turning around. It really set me off. Brooke was like, “I’m scared to look around now.” I said, “Yeah, you’re going to get me in a fight if you do.” It was crazy. I thought I was going to be in a fight for sure as soon as we walked in. I had to throw my weight around. After that I could see them casually turning to look at me, so I would just look back at them making them turn back as if they weren’t looking. I got some spect, boys. It was quite an adventure.

Comment by DOMS 287 — June 30, 2007 @ 10:43 pm

Man, doms you are really going off the deep end, lol, somehow, i really doubt that you got the spect from those people. LOL, you really crack me up. And i didn’t ask the advice the other knowing already what i was going to do, but it was a worthy discussion that dealt with serious issues.

Comment by jtuffy — July 1, 2007 @ 8:23 am

when are you going to oklahoma doms, you still there spence?

Comment by jtuffy — July 1, 2007 @ 8:26 am

Trust me, I got my spect. We’re probably going back on Friday or Saturday. It depends on her job schedule for this week which hasn’t been established since we decided to stay.

Seriously, what would you have done in my situation–guys just two to three steps away turnin all the way around to look at your wife as if you weren’t there and as if they weren’t afraid of doing something (what that’d be, I don’t know). The biggest key is that they are so close. Had they done this from across the room, not so bad. But they were right there and looking like they were going to do something! What would you do? Just act like you don’t care or just don’t notice? You’d look like the biggest wimp b/c they’d all know you saw their super blatant actions! Maybe you imagine them just turning around but keeping their heads back with their friends and just snickering a little. WRONG. Imagine them first leaning forward, then swinging around to look. Now they are leaning far forward toward your wife and blatantly looking her up and down like they are the coolest losers on the planet. They were clearly trying to be alarming in one way or another, and they were all doing it! If you ignored that, that’d be like ignoring a bunch of guys with masks all dressed in black walking past your window late at night!

And, about your question on Friday, I wasn’t saying you knew what you were going to do, but I assume you had a pretty good idea and it wouldn’t be too hard to go either way for you. Mine is something I’ve put off for years. If I did do something about it, it’d be something HUGE. I can’t exactly imagine doing anything about it, but some people certainly would, I would think. This is why I’m going to ask you girls. Maybe I should consider taking some action.

Comment by DOMS 287 — July 1, 2007 @ 3:21 pm

This is Jenny. Michael if I were you I would have have been flattered that someone was checking out my woman(or in my case my man).

Comment by jtuffy — July 1, 2007 @ 8:25 pm

Flattered!? I was threatened! But seriously, it was very threatening, not flattering. They were VERY, ridiculously forward about it, and there were so many of them! Exaggerate the situation in your mind and that’s what happened. They were so forward about it that there was no reasonable way to ignore it. I had to call them out. They were three steps away and leaning in! If they would have done a single additional thing, it couldn’t possibly have been subtle (they were already far beyond the line of subtleness). All in all, they weren’t acting in a flattering way. They were acting in a threatening way. So now, if you can believe me about this, what would you do? I really doubt you would take it as nice compliment and just smile inside and sit down and mind your own business. Groups are more dangerous than individuals; add alcohol and what do you get? Not something you can ignore if you ask me. Jenny, give me your honest opinion now. If it’s the same, then okay.

Comment by DOMS 287 — July 1, 2007 @ 8:55 pm

So what was going to happen, were they going to beat you up and club brooke over the head and drag her back to their cave, but only after they finished they tgif meal? LOL, come on now doms, threatining?

Comment by jtuffy — July 1, 2007 @ 9:30 pm

Yeah, you’re right. Nothing bad EVER happens in situations like that. You’re totally right. Wish I had your abilities to judge situations. I guess you just want a gun for target practice, not protection b/c, come on tuffy, what is going to happen, is someone going pick your house out of thousands to sneak in through the vents with a machine gun just blasting away at your family? “LOL”

Comment by DOMS 287 — July 1, 2007 @ 10:04 pm

This is Jenny again. Since you want my opinion I’ll give it…I agree with jonathan in a less harsh way. Your mind works so much differently then most people’s. I just can’t imagine worrying that someone was going to beat me up especially while I was sitting in a restaurant with a bunch of people even if they were drunk. The safest thing would be to just ignore them and feel good about your wife being good looking enough that guys would be checking her out. Getting up in their faces just makes them want to beat you up.

Comment by jtuffy — July 1, 2007 @ 10:06 pm

It’s not that I was feeling a direct threat of a fight; it’s more that I felt a threat that they were going to do something to Brooke (like approach her as if I wasn’t there) that would lead only to major problems, like a fight. Guys in groups with alcohol can do anything when it comes to girls. It would have been easy for those guys to have been looking for girls AND trouble (some of us have done it even without the alcohol). They made it obvious they were looking for girls and that I was no concern of theirs at first. As for looking for trouble, that was to be seen, but they had taken the first step for that; therefore they could have been interested in that too. Instead of just looking like I am a pushover, and then just letting them do whatever they were planning on doing (whether that means looking away or not), I just called them out immediately to find out what their intentions were. They were idiots for doing what they did if they only had casual intentions. What would have happened if I would have left for the bathroom? Do you think they would have just left her alone. I’m certain they wouldn’t have (you had to see how they were acting). But if they would have approached her in that situation, do you think they would’ve only had innocent intentions? Of course not, they would have been testing the waters, which includes testing MY waters, which they certainly were doing from the get-go.
