What does coincidence mean to you? I mean in your life; I'm not asking for your definition. I'm willing to bet that tuffy never notices coincidences, or at least doesn't give them a second thought when they occur.
Let's start here. People like tuffy probably can't say much more than a sentence or two after this prompting, and one of the sentences will probably be off topic (probably a degrading comment about the topic and/or the author of the topic), but if you're anything like me, then you'll have a lot to say. I hope we get more than three people blogging, but that's pretty ambitious.
So I go to class two days ago... I reach under the desk to pull it out a little, and I put my hand in gum under the desk! Annoying, so I make a big deal about. I say wow, we're in college and people are still putting their gum under their desks.
Then yesterday, just 24 hours later, I see a commercial for the movie Baby Momma (of which I've never seen before), and what is the key scene in the commercial??? Of course it's the baby momma getting caught sticking gum under the coffee table. The same general scenario! A person that should know better putting gum under the table! What are the chances that these two moments would come together in my life so closely! Seriously, how often do you talk about gum under tables? And how often do you make big deals about it? And how often do you see it on tv? I'm telling you, crazy.
That example is just one very SMALL incident that has happened since I started this post. These things happen ALL THE TIME. Coincidence is my middle name. Now, the above example may be meaningless (maybe not, too) and kind of silly, but it is an example of what I experience ALL THE TIME. I could go on and on boggling your mind with examples that happen to me ALL THE TIME.
Yes I think that is weird. I don't think it is coincidence. Something that happens everyday happens to you and it becomes unique to your situation/your brain waves whatever you want to call it. You don't notice the constant barrage of information and stimulations (i know doms will take a comment here : ) ) Throughout the day until it has become internalized by you. Perfect example is buying a car or liking a new car. All of a sudden you "seem" to notice a lot more of the cars on the road. Nothing changed, just your perception of a unique identifier.
That's about the kind of response I'd expect from you, but how about the big coincidence that happened to me about a week ago??? What? You don't remember? That's funny because it happened to you too...
Yeah, if I recall, tuffy calls me up and gives me the big news... that he may be moving to Alaska. Pretty crazy huh. You don't just talk about Alaska every day, nor do you have the kind of conversation ol' tuffy and I had that day about him now getting the chance to hunt some real caribou. Yep, I said that very thing. Then do you know what happened??? Wasn't it the very next day? McCain announces his running mate, the great hunter of caribou, the woman from the large state of Alaska. How about that coincidence? Just one of those barrages of stimuli that I finally began to recognize? I don't think so Tim.
So that is what it is a coincidence, not a shifting of the stars. How many other thousands of people had conversations about Alaska the day before? Are they special too? : )
A guy I had dated for 4 years cheated on me with a black girl who was a stripper. I broke up with him, then the next day all day on tv, everything I watched had black girls in it. Even the commercials.
I remember being irritated all day long. Oh, and her name was Peaches. Yeah, think I saw some peaches at the store that day too.
Oh my gosh Leigh Ann, in your sarcasm you caused me to experience another coincidence! You won't believe this but we just spoke about a new research study yesterday called PEACHES! That's an acronym, and a crazy coincidence!
Freud said that there are no coincidence and I have to agree. Coincidence, I think, fall into two categories. One is our minds projected meaning onto otherwise random events giving us a glimpse into our unconscious processes.
The second is our inability to accept a higher power at work in our lives.
In my experiance those seem to sum it up. We are either making something of nothing in the brains effort to make sense of the constant stream of data that we call the world and our place in it. Or when something important is actualy happening we swap into the exact opposite mode and deny it to protect the fragile reality we have spent so much time creating for ourselves. (conveniantly avoiding any responsibility that might come from such knowledge of anything outside our current perspective, I might add)
Doms, why do you take such issue with Jon for not sharing your belief in coincidence?
I just knew tuffy would be so surface minded, that's all. Nothing personal.
Check out this latest coincidence and tell me it isn't amazing: Brooke's been at work ever since I got home today. So I read a book for about thirty minutes. The next to last page I read before Brooke calls to tell me she's home with groceries (therefore telling me to stop reading and come out to help), I read the following sentence the author, a doctor, just threw in out of no where: "I remember the first time I reattached a finger, and I saw it pink up, and it was wondrous." Then the author gets back on topic and that little sentence really isn't anything more. That is until Brooke comes in! She raises up a baby outfit to show me (no, the coincidence is not that it was pink... cause is wasn't...). Ask her where she got it and she proceeds to tell me this detailed story about a customer of hers that had "points" or something to trade for a product in the store, and so on and so forth until the story ends with the customer leaving and then returning to Brooke some time later with the gift of the baby suit. I thought this was kind of weird, a customer buying an employee gifts, so I asked Brooke, "What did you do when she tried to give you the gift?" Brooke responded with one sentence, "I turned pink."
Note that Brooke does not use this phrase often, nor do I know of a time that she even has, but even if she says it twice a year, she said it this time about twenty, yes, just twenty minutes after I had read that random insignificant sentence! Do the math people, that is crazy!
Now, let me tell you guys something. There is benefit to recognizing coincidence. A scientist must be aware of coincidence. It may inform him of possible links to a phenomenon not yet known. If you spend your life just letting these events just happen with no thought, then what might you be missing?
I know Freud is omniscient and all, but could he be off ever so slightly this one time? I mean, could he be fallible after all?
You should try coming up to the surface for some air of common sense Doms, you're drowning in your own demons (which happen to be about pink colors). LOL
I agree 100% with Seth's freud comment. I would like to add a 3rd reason. Stuff happens, random events occur, someday, i'm sure i'll run into someone else named Jonathan Cummings who likes captain crunch and can do toe touches.
I'm with Doms... coincidence is fascinating...peaches, pink, and all.
It's happened to me too many times to say coincidence is merely a coincidence. In my life most instances were unveilings...told me something I needed to know.
I never said we should ignore coincidence. If anything I said the opposit. Coincidence is a glimpse into the unconcious function of the mind.
They say that we only use 10% of our brains... well this is a ridiculus half truth. We use all of our brains, just not consciously and for good reason. Could you imagine if you were conscious of keeping your heart beating and you got distracted? Bad news. Anyway, freud sugested that we can glimpse the unconscious through coincidence, slips of speach and jokes as they are often moments when the unconscious slips into view of the conscious. Most people chalk one up to dumb random luck, when they should be looking for meaning. It's a message to the conscious 10% from the unconscious 90%. And since the 90% contains most of the memory storage functions... I think looking for those meanings is particularly important (like Doms sugested for scientists.) Glimpses of our memory storage processes also explain what Jon was talking about earlier, when we notice coincidence ralated to things we have been thinking about alot.
So, I never said that we should ignore coincidence. I just said there are no coincidence, these instances are more than just "a striking occurrence of two or more events at one time apparently by mere chance" as Dictionary.com suggests. Once again Doms chooses to believe what he wants to instead of reading what other are actualy saying, lol.

Can anyone read that and understand it as someone that believes in coincidence as I do? It sounds just like tuffy saying coincidence is just what happens when you become conscious of stimuli that was once filtered in your mind.
Sorry seth, it's your own fault I misunderstood your support. Stating that "there are no coincidence and I have to agree" and then listing two alternative explanations for them does not come across as a consensus.

I'm just going to keep posting this until Doms gets back in his right mind. Keep tryin' lil' buddy... it'll click sooner or later!
So... what are your opinions about this financial crisis? After the stock market meltdown yesterday, Greenspan said this is the worst crisis he has seen in his lifetime. Several other very well respected analysts have compared this to the stock market crash of 1929 with one significant difference, there is more money involved this time.
The real dafeler though is McCains apparent belief that things aren't that bad, or that the "fundamentals" of our economy are strong. I just don't get it... do you guys? Not trying to slam your guy... just wondering how you guys feel about this statement and if you really think he is the man to resolve the financial crisis we are in.
Now, I know the first impulse is to compare him to Obama... but I want to know what you think of McCain and his suggested policies, not what you dislike about his opponent. What is McCain actualy going to do and do you think it would really work? I'm really curios about this, so please let me know what you all think.
Also, here's something funny. If you feel like jumping out the window after you look at the stocks... just watch this and laugh instead! http://sendables.jibjab.com/sendables/1191/time_for_some_campaignin#/teaser/1191

Why i don't notice coincidences; because i don't think the world revolves around me like some people.
.....there you got your 1 sentence. have to play to the crowd i guess.
Well, what happened? Hello, Bueller....Bueller???
Sorry I couldn't blog. Just call me seth.

Okay Leigh Ann, what's the deal? You were sarcastically against me, now you claim to be with me. Explain youself.
So what are you trying to get at Doms?
I'm gettin at the fact that she's pulling an Obama -- she isn't clear on where she stands on this issue!

BOOOOO DOMS !
The Peaches story was true except for the peaches in the grocery store comment. I was just joking around about that part.
I never said I was against you. In fact, I backed you up with a true story about something that happened in my life.
Wasted.
